Carolyn Maccabee's Review: The Ninth Gate is about an ostensibly fictional occult book called The Nine Gates of the Kingdom of Shadows. In attempting to authenticate a copy of this rare and valuable book, the protagonist, Dean Corso, becomes ensnared in a Satanic conspiracy. Subtle but powerful effects give this movie an eerie supernatural air without distracting the viewer too much from the interaction of these fascinating people and organizations. This movie kept me on the edge of my seat all the way to the end. It was only afterward that I realized what was really happening. In a particularly daring tactic, the architects of this film used the book's author and Roman Polanski to expose themselves. Why would an occult conspiracy expose itself? The reason is diabolically clever: they are using this movie to indoctrinate millions of viewers for them. As the movie follows Corso's progress through the mysteries of the nine gates, the viewer is exposed to a series of tarot-like symbols. In sequence, these symbols lead Corso to his Satanic destiny. This is similar to a technique used by the Grays, wherein images and associations are used to subtly alter the subject's perceptions. As Corso is initiated through these symbolic experiences, so are we, if we're not careful. This is an interesting, well, crafted movie, but a dangerous one.
Ed Phillips's Review: Where is everybody? I come in and all there is a note from the crazy chick. Nobody in the office today??? Is it Easter already. I havent seen this movie. Let whatsername do it.
